Abstract
The development of nanometer scale measurement/manipulation nearly 20 years ago led to the formation of many national nanotechnology initiatives around the year 2000. Nearly ten years later, the consequences for science / engineering knowledge have been substantial; nano-enabled technologies are now penetrating the commercial marketplace.
This talk will review the present and future status of U.S. nanoscience / nanoengineering investments, with special attention to the opportunities identified by three recent NSF funded workshops ("Translational Nanomedicine", "Partnership for Nanotechnology Education", and "Micro-Nano Systems Horizons 2040"), and a NNI sponsored workshop ("Nanotechnology Enabled Sensing").
