Dr. Furse has several student research jobs
- Undergrads (Freshman-Seniors) - Engineering Outreach, including someone interested in videography (editing, etc.) and web design (just simple, will train).
- Seniors or Grad students in Electromagnetics – Computational EM projects related to wiring. Grad students must be interested in doing a thesis in EM.

Undergraduate Research Opportunity Fall 2008
Research in Transparent Antennas
The materials used for microwave antennas are typically metals, which are opaque to visible light. However, in some applications it is desirable to have the antenna be transparent to visible light. Examples would include antennas mounted on windows, vehicle windshields, and on top of the solar cells used to power satellites. Luckily, there are some materials (typically oxides) that are both good electrical conductors while at the same time being nearly transparent in the visible.
In collaboration with Prof. Furse (ECE, U Utah) and Prof. Baktur (ECE, Utah State University), Prof. Scarpulla (ECE and MSE, U Utah) has an opportunity for an advanced undergraduate student to work on fabricating and testing transparent antennas using the U Utah Microfab. The ideal candidate should have prior cleanroom experience which could include enrollment in microfabrication courses. It is hoped that this project will lead to a senior project and, ideally, support from the UROP program (http://www.ugs.utah.edu/urop/uropguide.htm).
Interested students should contact Prof. Scarpulla (scarpulla@eng.utah.edu) with an email briefly but clearly explaining a) their interest and aptitude for this project b) their relevant microfabrication experience, and c) their academic record.
Electromagnetics Research Assistantships
Dr. Om Gandhi needs two research assistants and one or two postdoctoral research associates to work in the area of Numerical Electromagnetics (primarily FDTD) applied to problems in RF/Microwaves and bioelectromagnetics. Knowledge of FDTD (e.g. ECE 6340) is important.
For additional information, contact the Graduate Secretary in the ECE office.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program
The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) provides undergraduate students and faculty members the opportunity to work together on research or creative projects. UROP provides assistantships up to $1050 per semester to a student who assists with a faculty member's research or creative project, or who carries out a project of her/his own under the supervision of a faculty member. Students may apply for a UROP assistantship for any semester (summer included), and are eligible to apply for a one semester renewal of their assistantship.
