Engineering Used to Inspire Students
Engineering is the link between the subjects of science and math and the way in which the world around us operates. Think of everyday things such as the food we eat, the water we drink, the medicines and medical devices that help keep us healthy, the energy we use, the clothing we wear, and the ways in which we communicate, travel, and recreate. Chances are, an engineer has had a hand in bringing them to us. The fields of engineering are as exciting as they are varied. Introducing engineering principles to students in grades K-12 can spark their curriosity and inspire them to further their math and science studies.
Through a partnership between the Colleges of Education and Engineering, the University of Utah is offering a professional development course targeted at Jr. High and High School teachers of math and science classes. This course, entitled "Engineering Principles in the Classroom," will investigate the use of engineering modules, developed by College of Engineering students and faculty, for teaching secondary education math and science concepts. Please see the course links to the left for more information.
