3rd Attempt Petition

Policy

The University of Utah has a campus-wide policy on how a course may be repeated for credit. The Electrical & Computer Engineering Department enforces this policy for students pursuing Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering degree pathways. – See Repeat Policy

Any course may be taken at most twice, and any grade, including a ‘W’, will count as an attempt. Two unsuccessful attempts will result in placement on the ECE Monitoring List.

Process

If extenuating circumstances or a non-academic reason has prevented a student from completing a course successfully within two attempts, a third attempt may be approved for credit towards the ECE degrees. To petition for such an exception, a student will need upload the following to the petition form:

Petition Packet that contains the following:

  • Your name, uNID, and date.
  • Personal Statement: Highlight previous points of struggle and/or the extenuating circumstances and your plans to overcome these barriers
  • Plan for Success Essay: A concrete and detailed plan for academic success in the third and final attempt that makes good use of resources for success (a student’s plan should be proactive to make use of academic resources and non-academic resources for students for course success)

Time Audit Worksheet:

  • This must include all classes and all non-academic commitments outside of class.
  • The schedule should demonstrate adequate time management being spent attending class, studying as well as doing assignments.

Students who are currently enrolled in a course for a third attempt without petition approval may be removed from the course after the start of classes or may find the course not consistent toward degree requirements.
