Steps to Complete (All Students)
DUO 2FA
University of Utah students, faculty, staff, affiliates, and alumni are required to use two-factor authentication (2FA) when logging in to use certain online U applications and IT systems.
University of Utah students will either need to download the Duo Mobile app or they can buy a Duo 2FA Token device to generate their login codes.
CAMPUS INFORMATION SERVICES (CIS)
- UNID*: Uxxxxxxx
- Default Password: your birthdate in MMDDYY format
*Your UNID is just your student ID with the first 0 replaced with a U (that’s what you will use for most of your logins, not your actual student ID) If you don’t know what your student ID is, please email the Graduate Student Coordinator.

SETUP & CHECK YOUR UMAIL!
Please check your email regularly or at least set-up email forwarding. Now that you have been admitted all of your official University notifications will be sent to this email, this includes emails from the Graduate Student Coordinator, your professors, etc.
Even if you send something from your work or personal email, we cannot verify the identity of the email sender, so any response relating to grades or other sensitive topics will be sent to the student’s UMail to meet FERPA and Student Privacy policy.
The default address for each student is UNID@.utah.edu but we encourage students to customize their email alias. Ex: john.doe@utah.edu, j.doe@utah.edu, etc.
UCARD
UCard Benefits include free public transportation (TRAX, Frontrunner, and UTA buses), library access, upload UCash, and receive student discounts. You can ask the UCard office when these benefits will be activated.
HOW TO REGISTER
TUTORIAL: How to Register for Classes
REGISTRATION FAQ
- How many credits should I enroll in? Full-time graduate students take anywhere from 9-12 credits. Those who are working and attending part-time enroll in 3-7 credits.
- What do I do if I can’t enroll because it says I’m missing prereqs or need department consent? Our system struggles to match prereqs for classes, especially for students who completed their prior degree(s) at a different institution. All you need to do is request a permission code!
- How do I register for Thesis Research? Please request a permission code (be sure to request for your faculty advisor’s section of research!)
- How do I register for Project Credits? Follow the steps on the MS Project page and email the completed form to the Graduate Student Coordinator to be enrolled by the department.
ADDITIONAL TIPS FOR SUCCESS
- Look at our our Graduate Course Offerings and Areas of Emphasis page for tentative course schedules and sample programs of study.
- Verify upcoming term course offerings in the Main Campus Class Schedules. New special topic courses (5960/6960) often pop up that are not on our previously listings.
- If you have questions about the courses or wish to see a syllabus in advance, email the Graduate Student Coordinator to see if they are available for your desired course.
- Feel free to register for a variety of courses, look at the Canvas pages when they open the first day of term, attend/meet the professor, and then decide which courses to keep or drop by the term add/drop deadline at no cost to you!
- Bookmark the academic calendar and be aware of the tuition deadline (same as the add/drop)
- Some textbooks will be on Canvas, others you can buy at the Campus Store.
Some of these steps can be completed prior to your arrival or you can complete them as soon as you are on-campus; however they are very important because if they are not completed a hold will be placed on your university account and you WILL NOT be able to register for classes.
Need a vaccination? Learn about the charges and fees here. Please note, immunizations are available at the Student Health Center (building 685) by appointment ONLY, from 9am-4pm Monday-Friday. Call for details: (801) 581-6431.
HOUSING
We strongly recommend that you consider placing your name on the waiting list for the University Student Apartments (especially if you are an International Student) and/or that you secure temporary housing with another student for ~1 month upon arrival. Please know that housing in Salt Lake City requires thoughtful planning and thorough preparation. You will need to take action to locate housing at your earliest convenience. Consider exploring multiple opportunities for housing to ensure that you find a suitable option. You may use the following resources to support you in locating housing.

Additional Steps for International Students

- Submit your immigration materials to immigrationdocs@utah.edu
- Check the status of documents, login into the application tracking system and view the Immigration Checklist
All newly admitted international students on an F-1 visa are required to attend International Student Orientation. This includes students transferring from other U.S. institutions. There is no online orientation session. Attendance is in person.
